However, how did the public feel about some of these crimes? Does the evidence suggest their attitudes matched those of the lawmakers?
Exam questions could look at attitudes to crime. They could also focus on the rise and decline of the Bloody Code...
To find out more about the Bloody Code go to the Old Bailey Online website and try some independent research.
A good website for Highway Robbery is this one. It has some interesting sources and original pictures from the period.
Even more info about the era of the Bloody Code can be discovered here!

In the 19th Century most ordinary people's attitudes towards smuggling and poaching were that they didn't see it as a major crime and as long as they were being supplied with smuggled goods such as tea, dry foods and ale's they weren't that bothered. This is because smugglers sold there items for less than the average shop. The main reason that highway robbery declined is because there were more crimes that were becoming Capital crimes and the more that people committed these crimes, such as highway robbery the harder the law enforcement were coming down on them. Also because it was getting harder to do because the law was becoming stricter toward crimes and the Bloody code was becming more vicious.
I'm sorry sir but i can't do the last question i don't have time plus i can't find anything to do with Hogarths print thingy. Sorry i'll do it in a esson i'm running late.Bye amy.c xXx
1) Most ordinary people thought that smuggling was a good thing. From the 16th to 19th century many people thought smuggling was a good thing because it meant that they got cheaper goods that what was being sold in the shops.
2) The main reason for the decline of the highway robbery was because of the decrese of profit that could be made. The government closed tavers and inns, this prevented the highwaymen from being able to sell anything in secret.
3) Hogarth's prints suggested quite a lot about the effects of public excecutions. It suggests that people where encouraged greatly to attend the excecutions.
1 - People enjoyed Poaching and smuggling because it involved good pay and if you aided the smugglers with the smuggling you could earn up to 7 times more than just working on the farm during one delivery
2 - The main reason that the highway robbery declined was because the law began to come up with ways to target them for instance, They put guards into the taverns so that they wouldnt be able to sell off their loot and gain profit from the theft thus rendering the crime useless because they wont be able to gain money.
3 - Hogarth's print shows that people enjoyed the executions mainly because they would get free beer haha xD
