- Question 3 -
Britian used transportation as a punishment because it proved effective in "Clensing" Britian of the criminals it also was a hanging to alternative to hanging.
It proved to be a effective way to get rid of the criminal and possibly reform them at the same time and then have them return to Britian once there sentence had been completed they could be a good asset towards the kingdom and help create money for the country.
Source C Said that "Far from my friends and home so dear, My punishment is most severe... I'm afraid, That i shall die a convict maid" and "I tail each day in grief and pain" The shong sheet includes these sentences to deter femaled from stealing and to let people know that transportation was a cruel and lonely thing which a minority of people died from and that was just the transporting journey which could last up to 9 months.
Source D shows a image of a ship used to transport prisoners. We can see from this that the ship has a huge weight capacity for people and could've possibly been well armed. They were also used to hold prisoners prior to being shipped to Australia.
- Question 5 -
Sources F and G both give the impression that australia wants all the criminals because it is cheap labour and then more jobs would become available so they could earn profit from british criminal workers.
Source F Says "We say to England, Ship all your crime and poverty to us. There is the labout where demand maybe described as unlimited..." What we can learn from this is that convicts were vastly throughout the country so that the slave owners could gain slave labour from them.
While source G Says "Some masters are a great deal better than others, We have as much to eat as we like and all a man has to mind is to keep a still tongue in his head" We can learn from this that what he was basically saying is that the conditions that you are treated are greatly based upon the way you act and behave when around your master and fellow slaves.
This is also a reason why crime increased due to transportation because if you were exported to Australia you would probably end up living a better life that would you have stayed in the UK where you wouldnt earn much due to supporting a family or other reasons based upon the economy and also because of a gold rush began to happen in Australia so people could gain wealth from it.
- Question 6 -
Both sources varied greatly for instance if it was the british authorities writing then they may describe it as a terrible punishment which could result in your death in the long run and also it would be used greatly to try to deter people from commiting crimes whilst on the otherhand if it was writen by a prisoner he would probably speak the truth because there is very little reason to lie because he had already commited the crime and has passed his sentence so he would try to inform people about the experience he faced and it could possibly deter other people or he could just exaggerate in an attempt to get sympathy.
- Question 7-
Both historians would come up different views about Transportation due to the fact that Anthony has a bigger area to cover whilst Deborah is focused upon one part of Transportation.
For instance Anthony has to read over a history of Punishment in Britain so he would have vast knowledge on the form Punishments and so his views would vary greatly towards Deborah who has research only a small fraction of Punishments around in the 18-19th Century
- Question 8 -
I dont think that transportation ended due to the Australians being against it but i believe that it was due to the fact that people who got transported ended up living better lives and because of this it led to a major increase in crime so that people who lived in the down beaten parts of the UK could gain wealth and live in a better climate. The Goverment didnt like this because of the crime increase obviously and so thats why they banned transportation
